When Uber and Lyft came to Chicago more than a decade ago, driving rideshare was a way to make a solid living while working flexible hours.

But over time, these app-based corporations have increased fares for passengers while decreasing wages for drivers, making record profits for shareholders while the drivers doing the work struggle to make ends meet.

At the city level, Chicago Gig Alliance, The People’s Lobby’s rideshare organizing campaign, is working to pass the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance, which will win drivers a living wage and grant them the basic safety protections that all workers deserve. Nationally, we coordinate with other rideshare groups to push back on corporations whose business model relies on exploiting gig workers.
